Lyotropic liquid crystals formed in 3-dodecyloxy-2-hyclroxypropyl tri1nethyl ailllnonium bromicle-H-butanol-n-decane-water system

Lyotropic liquid crystals formed in 3-dodecyloxy-2-hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (a new surfactant)n-butanol-11-decane-water system have been studied. Pseudo-ternary phase diagrams have been drawn based on experimental data at 298.2 K, and the speci fi c regions in which a single type of liquid crystal existing or diffe rent types of liquid crystal s coexisting have been determined in the diagrams. Some typical photographs clearly showing tex ture structure of liquid crystal have been obtained using polari zing-light microscope and the symmetry structure of the liquid crys tals has been detennined with ~H nucJear magneti c resonance ( 1-1 NMR) method. The form ation of crystal liquid has been proved to be an exothermal process by diffe rential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The experimental results of the exploited methods ·' show th at the reg ions or microemul sion and liquid crystal contract with increase in percentage of the oil (n-decane) in the system.The phase struclllre varies fro m the single lamella liquid crystal s to mi xed lamella, hexagonal and cubic crystals, and finally to microcmul sion with the addition or water into mixture containing onl y lamella crystal region.
